WHO WE ARE
|
|
Sport In
Action (SIA) is a non-governmental organisation
(NGO) whose purpose is to improve people’s quality of life
through sport and recreational activities. Founded in 1998, SIA
was the first Zambian sports NGO. With sport for development (the
use of sport as a tool for social change) as its underlying
principle, SIA positively impacts the lives of thousands of
children throughout 24 districts in Zambia. SIA staff and
volunteers work with more than 160,000 children each week, many
of whom come from challenging backgrounds. Through this work
lives have been transformed due to knowledge enhancement in the
area of healthy and life skills, behavioural
change towards both family and peers and improvement in sporting
abilities.

|
VISION & MISSION
|
|
Vision:
“Active, healthy and better living for all”
Mission:
“Sport In Action shall endeavour to use
sport and recreation as a tool to improve the quality of
children’s lives by providing a program that will being about
motivation, self-development, child protection and self-reliance
through social and economic empowerment.”
|
|
WHAT WE DO
|
|
Sport has
the power to act as a mobilising tool
in a way that no other activities do. A combination of the fun,
enjoyment and physical challenges experienced by children the
world over has led to the conclusion that it is the ideal arena
through which valuable life lessons can be acquired. In light of
this Sport In Action works on delivering development programs in
schools and communities throughout Zambia which bring
about motivation, self-reliance and self-development through
social, cultural, political and economic empowerment. Each
component is underpinned by education on HIV & AIDS, drug and
alcohol abuse prevention, gender equality and child rights.

MEET THE TEAM
|
|
Sport
In Action has over 250 volunteers working throughout Zambia,
implementing its programs and projects. The organization would
not operate as effectively as it does without a single one of
these valuable members of the team. Below are the pictures and
profiles of the Sport In Action secretariat who work daily at the
organisation’s headquarters in Lusaka.

Mr. Clement Chileshe,
President
|
|

is one of the early leaders at ground level within the emerging
field of Sport for Development. He is Founder and President of
Sport In Action (SIA) in Zambia, the first and largest sport NGO
whose basis is to use sport as a tool for development. Mr.
Chileshe is also the African representative of the International
Alliance for Youth Sport (IAYS) as well as a member of the
National Olympic Academy (NOA) in Zambia. He holds a diploma in

|
|
As a retired high
performance basketball athlete who also played 6 sports
competitively at junior levels, he began his coaching career in
1989 when he worked as a children’s sports coach in the former
Zambia Corporation Copper Mines (ZCCM) Kabwe division. Since
then Mr. Chileshe has offered part time lectures in Basketball
at Nkrumah College, Kabwe, as well as periodical lectures at the
University of Zambia on Sports NGOs and Sport for Development.
He has coached three (3) senior Zambia Basketball Association (ZBA)
clubs, the regional senior teams and U-20 men & women’s national
teams, bringing honours to the country. He was the first Zambian
and currently the only Federation for International Basketball (FIBA)
expert of which he initiated the first mini basketball program
in Zambia in 1995 which introduced hundreds of children in many
parts of Zambia to child friendly basketball, many of whom grew
up to dominate senior national basketball leagues. He has
trained many basketball referees in schools and ZBA. He has been
President for the Physical Education Association of Zambia,
leading the revival process for PE in Zambian schools and
National Coordinator for the Zambia Sports Schools Association.
Mr. Chileshe’s over 12 years work in Sport for Development has
deeply influenced and changed thousands of young Zambian lives
and has put Zambia on the international map. The promotion of
Zambian traditional games integrated with life skills has drawn
people from all over the world to Zambia to study and learn
techniques used in these approaches. Using modified physical
education technics and traditional games Mr. Chileshe drove the
resuscitation of Physical Education into schools when it was
virtually redundant. He was also leader of the team that
designed activity and training manuals and facilitated the
initial Kicking AIDS Out leaders’ workshops in ten (10)
countries. Working closely with the Supreme Council for Sport In
Africa, ministries responsible for education and sport in
selected African countries, he has designed children’s and Sport
for Development programs for six (9) African countries under
IAYS Game On! Youth Sports. He has initiated and organized
several international children’s sports conferences worldwide
leading to his recognition by the Trinidad and Tobago Physical
Education Association in 2007.

Ministry of Sport, Uganda ministry of education and Sport,
Rwanda Ministry of Sport, UK Sport, Norwegian Olympic Committee,
University of Trinidad and Tobago, Dahurm University,
International Olympic Committee and many more. In 2007 he was
lead consultant for the first ever youth camp at the All Africa
Games working directly with the Algerian government and Supreme
Council for Sport in Africa (SCSA). He has presented more than
123 papers at international conferences in 19 countries. His
presentations have included the World Forum on Sport, Education
and Culture (Korea, 2008), the International Youth Sports
Conferences (USA 2002, 2004, 2006 and 2007), the 2nd UN
Magglingen Conference (Switzerland, 2005) and the Next Steps
Conference (Netherlands 2003 and Livingstone, 2005). He was the
founder and inspiration behind the first ever Zambian Sport for
Development Awards in 2008, organized in partnership with the
National Sports Council of Zambia (NSCZ).
Mr. Chileshe has developed a curriculum for Sport for
Development and sports management for the University of Trinidad
and Tobago; it is the only Masters in Sport for Development in
the world. Mr. Chileshe is also working with the Zambia Open
University to develop sports management programs in Zambia. He
has also been at the forefront of a partnership with nine (9)
European universities who have work together on joint sport for
development projects that provide added value to Zambia
communities and schools in which they work since 2006.
Mr. Chileshe is Zambia’s founding director for the current
Special Olympics Committee which has given hundreds of children
with intellectual disabilities positive life experiences through
sports in 4 provinces. He has been a strong proponent for the
rights of children with disabilities, advocating for the
breakdown of social stigma towards them and their inclusion in
society. SIA now work with nearly 1,000 children with
disabilities, offering them sport programs, equipment and
training their teachers in the delivery of sport for children
with disabilities. Mr. Chileshe has organized numerous
fundraising activities, specifically for the provision of
specially-designed sports equipment for children with
disabilities. He coordinated the training of four young athletes
for the 2007 Special Olympics in Shanghai. Two of the four
athletes gained silver medals in the 100m event, bringing home
Zambia’s first ever Special Olympics World championship medals
in 40 years of the competitions.
Mr. Chileshe’s work at SIA has no bounds. His work on the
delivery of sport integrated with health life skills has meant
that over 160,000 children per year receive education on HIV &
AIDS, drug and alcohol abuse prevention in Zambia. He has also
coordinated the renovation and creation of basketball, netball,
volleyball, baseball and football courts and pitches. Much of
this work was conducted in partnership with the Ministry of
Education and community schools, ensuring community input into
each project and high usage of facilities. He is the driving
force behind the creation of the Twafwane Community School and
Sports Academy, which is to act as the main centre for
children’s sports education and camps in Zambia.
More than 100 young people have benefited economically through
SIA young farmers through sport programs and rural areas and 42
young people are employed as full time and part time staff at
SIA.
